Located in the heart of Notting Hill, this project involved the comprehensive refurbishment and extension of a multi-storey property, addressing two distinct briefs for a single client. The works comprised the complete renovation of residential apartments across the first, second, and third floors, alongside a significant extension and refurbishment of the lower ground and ground floor commercial unit.

Designed to house a store for Vietnamese design, art, and products, the commercial space draws its primary inspiration from the bold, traditional yellow palette of Hoi An. The plan is meticulously arranged to integrate display areas across both levels, with the ground floor functioning as an adaptable gallery, meeting room, and event space, whilst the lower ground floor extension provides a well-proportioned, dedicated office.

A key ambition for the ground floor was to engage actively with the streetscape. The design aims to draw passersby into the threshold, allowing them to perceive the openness of the interior and encouraging them to wander into the shop to explore the depth of the space beyond. To address the site’s compact footprint and the unfavourable outlook from the rear, we introduced a section of perforated brick wall to the terrace. This intervention serves a dual purpose: it successfully obscures the view of neighbouring ventilation systems whilst allowing soft, diffused light to filter into the gallery, creating a sense of volume and depth.

The spatial flow is further enhanced by the relocation of the main staircase to the front of the plan, a move that significantly increases natural light penetration into the lower ground floor and fosters a welcoming atmosphere. Bespoke cement tiles, custom-coloured to match the vibrant interior palette, define the floor plane and provide a durable, aesthetic foundation that unifies the retail experience.
